Not all days are created equal. I get that. But I’m curious… what does your week day routine look like? Here’s mine…
Mornings are usually when I take care of my daughter. This is when my husband gets to work. We like to joke and call this our “shifts”. So, in the morning I have my “baby shift” and in the afternoon I have my “work shift”. My husband’s schedule is the opposite.
6 am: I’m usually up at this time thanks to my new alarm clock… my daughter. So at 6 am I’ll take care of her first. I get her out of her crib, change her and get her ready for the day.
Then we head back to my bed and I’ll breastfeed her. In the morning, this usually takes about 30 minutes. That’s because she loves the cuddle time. I love it too. It’s a special part of the day that we get to spend together in the quiet of the morning.
After that, I get ready and let my daughter play in our bedroom while I’m doing it. She gets pretty impatient so I usually try and get ready as quick as possible. Long gone are the days where I have an hour to put on makeup and do my hair!
7-8 am: For breakfast, we take our time. Luella helps me make a smoothie (she loves putting the spinach and bananas in the cup and yells “ready! Go!” when I turn the blender on.). Then we eat oatmeal and banana slices together and sip our smoothie. I usually take this time to do a bit of housework as well.
8 – 11 am: This is our play time. We’ll go to the park, go for a big walk around the community, do some cleaning, get groceries, do some other errands… basically anything that keeps her entertained and engaged.
11 am – 12 pm: Luella will go down for a nap just before lunch. So it’s quiet time for everyone. I usually spend this hour doing something simple. Sometimes I’ll answer emails. Sometimes I’ll just unwind with a little Netflix. Sometimes I’ll brainstorm and organize my to-do lists for life and business.
12 – 6 pm: My work shift technically starts at noon. Majority of my days are filled with content creation. I’m usually doing a lot of writing. Sometimes it’s blog posts, newsletters, social media content, email responses, or behind the scenes creation of products and courses.
I try to divide my time in to three main blocks:
- First, I’ll focus on the thing that requires the most brain power. For example, today I’m working on this blog post first. This seems to be the most efficient way for me to get my work done.
- Next, I’ll take a “brain power break” and work on smaller maintenance tasks. These include: responding to emails, creating images for promotions, working on website tweaks, running errands, etc.
- In the third block I’ll work on my production/creation phase. Usually this involves work I need to do to complete an upcoming product. Sometimes this is just research. Sometimes it’s writing workbooks, recording videos, or sketching designs. Today, I’m sourcing materials for a new product I’m creating.
6-7 pm: By about 6:00, I’m feeling pretty burnt out. These days can be pretty long. So, I reconnect with my daughter for half an hour. Usually we play together in our backyard and then eat dinner. At 6:30 she goes for her bath and begins her night time routine. Once she’s in her pjs, we say goodnight to daddy at her doorway and giggle together while daddy makes funny faces and pretends to trip and fall (she thinks it’s hilarious). Then, we cuddle, I breastfeed her, and put her to sleep.
7-9 pm: Some nights my husband and I will watch a movie during this time. Some nights we’ll work if we have a project deadline looming. And other times I’ll head to an evening yoga class.
By about 9:00 I’m done for the day. Before having our daughter, I’d usually stay up until 11:00. But the days are so jam packed now, and I’m happy to head to bed early.
So that’s what our week days look like. It’s not perfect, but it works great for us and this stage of life that we’re in!
